It is said to be a dolphin that can change into the form of a man to take beautiful, young women for its lovers in the water. Most die, though those that do survive are said to come back pregnant. Thus children without an apparent father are called Children of the Boto. Grandmother Manuella seems to be both the origin of the myth and the cause of it[1]
