The Bakumora is a Shadowfell domain taken from the Chultengard region of Chult on Faerun (the main setting of the Forgotten Realms). It is a land of steaming jungles and marshes, populated by both humans and lizardfolk in addition to the more recently arrived dracotaurs. The Kayebo clan, a clan of humans, were at peace with the Poison Dusk lizardfolk until the dracotaur dominated the lizardfolk and accused the humans of causing the mists to engulf the land. The humans, the Dracotaurs profess, are cursed, and the lizardfolk have orders to round up all the humans and deliver them to the dracotaurs.[2]

History

The truth of what caused the Bakumoro to become a full-blown domain is more complex. An external magical accident in a nearby land to the south caused a backlash warping the magical conditions of the surrounding region including the Bakumoro.[3] Freak storms struck the land, and the spirits of the dead did not rest quietly. Some time ago, Fotari, an archdruid and then spiritual leader of Kayebo Village, took a party of his fellow villagers to investigate the accident.[2]

Whatever he experienced while away from the village, Fotari returned to it a changed man[2], warped and corrupted by his own power.[3] Upon his return, Fotari murdered the Kayebo clan leader along with many of the other townspeople who tried to defend him. Fotari then abandoned the village and never came back. Soon after, the Mists engulfed the Bakumoro, and almost Fotari's betrayal nobody can leave the Bakumoro.[2]

More recently, conflict has interrupted the long-standing truce between Kayebo Village and the lizardfolk tribes residing nearby. As previously mentioned, the dracotaurs accuse the humans of being responsible for the Mists and magical corruption of the land. Subsequently, a raid on Kayebo Village racked up many casualties for the village, and Onyeka Kayebo, the new village leader, was poisoned. Kayebo Village is still reeling from the attack.[2]

Despite the dracotaur's accusations against all the humans, only one person holds responsibility for the Mists engulfing the land: Fotari, the realm's darklord[1]. Ironically, the delusional Fotari believes he is saving the land by giving souls to Ifalakuntho, a corrupted aspect of Ubtao. Only with the defeat of Fotari[1] and of Ufalakuntho.[3] can the Bakumoro be saved.

Magic and the Bakumora

Magic in the Bakumora has become tainted, such that any use of it blights or even kills plantlife in close proximity, similar to how defiling magic works in Kalidnay or Athas. Animals or plants summoned by spells are sickly in appearance, and a character brought back from the dead comes back drained by sickness.[4] The Ring of Winter, an artifact carried by Artus Cimber, has seen its magic warped by the Bakumora as well.[5]
