Given that he has the mental capacities and weakness of a human, is he still human too?Cure 05:01, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

I dunno, the same could be said of a lot of characters. Is The Brain human? Is the Marikith Queen? What about Death? Maybe a "Former Human" category? -- Gonzoron 16:51, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

While I like the Former Human idea, it opens up a hornets nest in that it potentially applies to a majority of the undead. How can go with the idea but avoid this problem?Cure 19:22, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes, it does, but then again, what's wrong with that? Shouldn't we note that Geddar Ironheart was an Dwarf before he became a ghost? If so, why not note that Azalin was a human? -- Gonzoron 19:54, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

You have a point there. Also it addresses that matter that I may have been wrongly sticking human on at the end of the categories for the likes of Strahd and Azalin. But in that case we need Former Dwarf, Former Elf, etc. too.Cure 20:19, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Upon further reflection... I think most people would expect Geddar to show up as "Dwarf", not "Former Dwarf", and Strahd as "Human", not "Former Human". "Dwarf Ghost" or "Human Vampire" make more sense than "Former Dwarf Ghost" or "Former Human Vampire", no? Yet "Human Marikith Queen" or "Human Negative Energy Elemental" doesn't. Maybe we make an exception for undead (and infected lycanthropes) and only tag with "Former" if they've changed into something truly unusual? I dunno. Thoughts? -- Gonzoron 22:05, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps a convention? I always put Human, Dwarf, etc. last. So Strahd would read: NPC, Darklord, Necromancer, Wizard, Vampire, Human. Or the Brain: NPC, Psoinicist, Aberration, Human.Cure 05:38, 4 March 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, this needs to be parsed...okay, try this: IF the creature type is no longer humanoid, AND the change was not the result of a template, race no longer applies. Thus, the Brain and the Marikith Queen are no longer human. Undeath and lycanthropy are all templates, right? DeepShadow 00:23, 5 March 2010 (UTC)

Sounds like as good a convention as any:

  • IF a humanoid character gains a template making them no longer humanoid (such as ghost, vampire, or other undeath template) they keep their original race.
  • IF a humanoid becomes a unique creature, or is completely transformed into a regular, non-template creature (like a hag, for example, or our friend Ahmi, here), they get a "Former ____" race.

(lycanthropy is a template, but it doesn't change the character's type, so they retain their race, both in the rules, and under the wiki convention).
