Stephen Muldowney is the abbot of Hedrington Monastery in Nidala. In his youth he served at Magauran Monastery where his brother Robert Muldowney was abbot. However, he departed Magauran and joined Denneshaw Monastery, where he found an abbot whose leadership style was less authoritarian. There Stephen was eventually inducted into the Old Ways.[1]
However, the idyll at Denneshaw ended when that monastery was destroyed by Banemaw. Fortunately Stephen and some of the other brothers were absent during the attack and so survived. After recovering the unedited copy of The Book of Radiance from its secret hiding place in the ruins of Denneshaw Monastery, Stephen led the other survivors to Hedrington Monastery.[1]
Although Stephen Muldowney continues to worship the broader Celtic Pantheon in secret, he is careful to keep Hedrington Monastery heavily warded to prevent it from falling to Banemaw as Denneshaw Monastery did.[1]
