Professor Hyron Tesca (of the Brautslava Institute) has a hypothesis about the mutations and hybridizations of normally incompatible forms of life around Stagnus Lake. According to his hypothesis, this is the result of an overabundance of positive energy breaking down the barriers between life forms and causing them to blend together.
