Prince Prospero is the protagonist of Edgar Allen Poe's story Masque of the Red Death. As with many literary characters, he has an in-the-flesh equivalent (born 1427)[1] on Gothic Earth. At the time of 1899 A.D., Prospero has lived about four centuries of an existence thrust onto him by a curse laid by Vlad Tepes. Eleven times, as counted by the ebony clock, has he been cursed to live through the deaths of many at his masquerade balls as the red death plague overtook them. Prospero fears the clock tolling twelve might signify the last of his existence.[2] Thus, as of 1899, he has extended a call to the masquerade to a few he whom seemed capable of handling the situation.[3]

Prince Prospero was once a rival of Vlad Tepes before the latter became a vampire. Prospero sought to win the hand of Frytha, a servant of the Dracula household. After Prospero achieved a narrow victory over Tepes in a sparring match, Vlad brutally attacked her. Midway through the attack, Prospero came across them and, incited with rage, lunged at Tepes with his polearm. Unfortunately, Tepes avoided the blow, deflecting it to strike Frytha. She survived, but Prospero's errant blow badly scarred her. The whole event also drove her mad. Prospero married her and cared for her the rest of her existence, which lasted some 3 decades.[4]

Years later, Prospero would eventually catch up with Tepes again at the latter's residence in Transylvania. There, Vlad Tepes laid down his cruel curse upon Prospero. The Red Death twisted and perverted the curse, giving Prospero a twisted form of quasi-immortality.[5]

Prince Prospero and his servants no longer age[1], but they are bound to Prospero Hall, The latter are bound only by their loyalty to Prospero and being out of place with the modern world. The latter cannot leave the grounds for more than half of a day without exposing his servants to the effects of the red death plague.[6] They are all otherwise immune to this dread disease.[1]
