The poppy is based upon the real-life opium poppy. In the Land of Mists, the poppy is a flowering plant native to Hazlan. Its sap is rendered into opium which is very useful as an anesthetic, but is also a highly addictive drug. Although the poppy itself is not exported, opium must certainly is.
