Nephyr is a minor NPC and monster encountered in Touch of Death. In life, Nephyr was one of the wives of Anhktepot, but she died from his cursed touch and later reanimated as one of the ancient dead. Her crypt (area 8e on the tomb map)[1] lies empty in Anhktepot's Tomb, as she now wanders the dunes of Har'Akir as a greater mummy.

Background

In life, Nephyr was Anhktepot's youngest wife. After Ra first cursed Anhktepot for his blasphemy but before he was murdered and reanimated, the corrupt pharaoh failed to understand the nature of his curse. He came into contact with many people as he normally would during the daytime without ill effect. However, the effects of his diseased touch took deadly effect when he touched them after sundown, claiming the lives of many over the course of the night, including Nephyr. They received funerals and were mummified before being entombed. Nephyr rose soon after her burial as one of the ancient dead, wrapped in her linens. Mute, her presence greatly horrified Anhktepot, who reflexively yelled at her to be gone into the desert wastes and never come back. He did not realize his commands had power over her, as he had accidentally more or less put her into permanent exile.[2]

Eventually, more of his mummified victims came to him, and he discovered how to control them. He murdered more priests and made them his undead thralls. Sometimes he would find them destroyed, and Nephyr may have well been the cause.[2]

Role In Touch of Death

In Touch of Death, she is encountered by the player characters in the desert shortly after a conflict with Senmet. She is on the usurper mummy's trail, observing his actions.[3] The specifics of her intentions, or her reactions to the PCs, are not detailed.

Other Information

A statue of Nephyr is among the six that grace the outer wall of Anhktepot's Tomb (Area 1 of the Tomb's map in ToD), but the statue's head has been vandalized.[4]. Another, undamaged statue lies in Area 4 with statues of the rest of Anhktepot's wives.[5]

Nephyr's Ankh was magical but broken into two halves (one in area 8e and one in area 10). If these halves are reunited, the ankh may be used to turn undead with increased efficacy.[6]
