A mourner is a type of undead native to the outlander world of Eberron, specifically the ruined nation of Cyre, now known as the Mournland. They appear as whispy beings made of gray mist with claws and vaguely humanoid features. Despite their all but weightless natures, they are not incorporeal and are capable of exerting force, even powerful strikes, upon their enemies. Reanimated by the wave that destroyed most of life in Cyre during the Day of Mourning, they are unable to move far from the ground or venture past the borders of the Mournland[1], at least upon their home world.
Origins
The mourners were originally a group of three hundred soldiers serving Thrane during the Last War. Fighting against Karrnath in Cyre, the soldiers were led into a Karrnathi ambush by their traitor captain. All the soldiers were slaughtered, but they were later given proper burial in a mass grave by other soldiers of Thrane. Three days after the deaths of the betrayed soldiers, a wave of horrid energy devastated Cyre. This same wave reanimated the soldiers as undead. Their ultimate motives are unknown, though they are not evil.[2]
Special Abilities
As creatures made of mist, mourners are capable of flight. They radiate auras of palpable gloom, suffering, and distrust that can leave those nearby shaken by the experience. Mourners can also unleash their suffering in horrible wails that cause their foes to run in fright. Finally, mourner claw strikes inflict Wisdom damage in addition to normal physical damage.[1]
In the Demiplane of Dread

Although highly limited in time and place as far as their home world, new incidents of mourners rising from truly extraordinary acts of betrayal could occur in the Demiplane of Dread[3], provided a suitable source of magical or other suitable energy was available. Considering the connection of the Mourning Pyre and its darklord, the Creeping Death, to the Mournland, mourners could likely manifest (or have been transported) there. Some soldiers from the various wars in Darkon may have awakened from their graves by negative energy unleashed by the Requiem. Consequently, they might be encountered in Darkon or Necropolis.

It has been suggested that the mourner qualifies as an Hungry Dead according the Walking Dead typology in Van Richten's Guide to the Walking Dead.[3] If their wispy natures allow them be classified as Walking Dead, mourners could quite possibly be Hungry Dead, given that they sap Wisdom with their claw strikes. However, it is also probable they are Restless Dead, given that mourners seem to have some unaccomplished need. Likely salient abilities might include Assume Form, Flaying Touch, Lure Victim, Paralysis, and Recalled Abilities.[3]
