First mentioned in Quoth the Raven Issue 30, in the Conquista Gazetteer, Professor Jean Ambrose is the Head of the Department of Folklore at la Torre del Conocimiento Sagrado in the city of Meyersville in Conquista.
Fall
Jean Ambrose hails from the same Prime Material world as Vieuxlyons and the Divided States. In an age of rationalism and science, he was considered a crackpot for claiming that the forces of evil, particularly the undead, still existed in the world. He spent more time looking for proof of his claims than he did educating, and (unknowingly) barely escaped being stripped of his tenure by leaving to investigate a suspected nest of vampires.
Professor Ambrose proved to have been right about the vampires - and woefully unprepared for what he would find. His sole companion, his protégé Edmund, fell prey to the vampires and professor Ambrose himself barely escaped with his life. As soon as he recovered, he started hunting for his now undead student and that student's vampiric mistress. The hunt brought him to Prime Material Vieuxlyons - just in time for its seminal event to drag it into the Demiplane of Dread.
Rise
While Vieuxlyons was an Island of Terror, Professor Ambrose was practically forced to fill a leading position in the domain's Ministry of Culture and Education. After the formation of the Wartorn Cluster and the end of the Conquista-Vieuxlyons war, he renounced his position and journeyed west, into Conquista. A mere shell of his former self, he initially presented himself at la Universidad de la Conquista, but was refused entry into the college. It was at la Torre del Conocimiento Sagrado that he found a new home.
Initially, Professor Ambrose had thought he would simply live out his life at la Torre, and he was considered genial and eccentric. When word came to him that two people resembling poor, undead Edmund and his vampire mistress had been spotted in a far part of the Cluster, however, Professor Ambrose rediscovered the fire that had brought him to hunt the undead in the first place. He has become hugely energetic for his age, constantly driven to learn new things and impart what he has learned. He has authored a number of books on mythology, monster lore and fairytales, and frequently travels to learn more. On occasion he even brings along students. It is his great ambition to find and put to rest his fallen friend, thereby redeeming himself for his old failure.
Promotions
Professor Ambrose barely noticed when he was appointed Head of the Department of Folklore at la Torre, but has acquitted himself well of his duties by the standards of that university. He was more interested when he was invited to the ranks of the new generation of los Viejos Sagrados by virtue of his scholastic achievements. He has greatly enjoyed his membership in the secret society, as it allows him to converse with scholars from all around the Cluster, and access to its dragon's hoard of knowledge.
Inspiration
The character and story of Professor Jean Ambrose was inspired at least in part by Professor Abronsius of the movie "The fearless vampire killers"[1].
