Crimson Bones are highly malevolent and chaotic skeletal undead, constantly dripping poisonous blood that splashes on nearby opponents when crimson bones are hit in combat.[1][2] The bite of a Crimson Bones inflicts Burning Blood, a nasty supernatural disease.[2] Crimson bones are immune to most of the clerical means of undead control. However, sithkin changelings or arcane spellcasters (via the Control Undead spell) can subvert these undead.[2]
Crimson Bones rise spontaneously from victims flayed[1] in ritual sacrifice[2] such as performed by evil Arak[1]. Despite the ritual nature of their origins, crimson bones are not created on purpose.[1][2] Though essentially mindless[1][2], crimson bones retain memories of their murders and murderers. Hence, they will go after teg and powrie before other foes.[1]
Crimson Bones are classified as Restless Dead, for their constant Craving to kill locks them in this eternal obsession.[3] A crimson bones wishes to tear the skin and flesh from its victims.[1]
Encountering Crimson Bones
Beyond the Shadow Rift, Crimson Bones can be encountered in the following domains: Darkon[4] and Keening[5] Within the Shadow Rift, they inhabit the Southern Rift, tending to prefer the more arid areas[6] such as the Darkenheights.[7] Some may have at one point been encountered serving in Prince Loht's saugh army[7], though all crimson bones in the Shadow Rift are ultimately controlled by Gwydion.[6]

As Harespex cleaved the second blood-drenched skeleton's head from its shoulders, a fine spray of red droplets coated his hands and arms. The thing fell, but even as it did so Harespex dropped his sword, turning frightened eyes toward me. "The blood," he whispered. "It's burning me, Mac Laren."
