Colmarr Greatorm is a character that first appears in the article Secrets of Freedom in Quoth the Raven Issue 29.
Origins
Colmarr Greatorm is a Rock Gnome, born on the island of Lantan[1] on the world of Toril. He left the island due to his desire to travel and explore the many possibilities of magic. During his travels, he became a devotee of Mystra, goddess of magic. Eventually, he encountered and fell in with the Harpers[2], seeing them as a great force for Good in his world.
Fall
In 1371 DR[3], Colmarr received a special mission from Elminster[4], most famous of the Chosen of Mystra. He was to find and 'gladden the heart' of Evanar, Mystra's secret Mother of Champions, so she would leave her seclusion and embrace love and laughter once more - and give birth to a new champion.
Colmarr found Evanar in her forest retreat, but the meeting did not go as Elminster and the Harpers' leaders had hoped. Everything about Evanar - her skillful blending of science and magic, her grim joylessness and strict adherence to the laws of hospitality, her knowledge of centuries of history across many worlds and the nature of the planes - impressed Colmarr to the point that he lost sight of his mission. When he finally learned of the true depths of Evanar's despair, the fact that she had been forced to become the Mother of Champions against her will and longed for death as a reprieve, the Gnome fled her presence instead of charming her forth.
Sevenstring
Based on what he had learned of the Planes and the many-worlds interpretation[5] at Evanar's home, not to mention a book she had secretly given him, Colmarr came to the conclusion that there was a better way to deal with the conflicts on Toril than to wage endless battle.
If infinite worlds existed in infinite variety, then conflicting factions could simply travel to new worlds and have them all to themselves. All that was needed was the right kind of portal.
In 1372 DR, Colmarr founded the Sevenstrings, petitioning numerous gods as sponsors and gathering recruits from among the mortal peoples. He let himself be guided not by Alignment or species, but by a willingness to work on the research and development of the necessary portal for the common benefit. Remarkably, he managed to gain a considerable following, and work on the portal was soon underway in a secret location.
Betrayal
Alas, no secret is absolute. Moonstar agents[6] discovered the Sevenstrings' headquarters and stole some research notes - which they wildly misinterpreted due to the mixture of arcane and scientific jargon. Believing the Sevenstrings to be a debased cult led by a traitor, with the aim of opening a portal to a hitherto-unknown layer of the Lower Planes, the Moonstars alerted the Harpers.
In 1377 DR, the Sevenstrings' base was attacked by a joint Moonstar-Harper taskforce. The weaker Sevenstrings Agents were slaughtered, the stronger (including Colmarr) forced back to the great room where they kept their portal prototype. An errant spell impacted the portal, which self-activated, connected to a far place and then exploded, seeming to have vaporized the Sevenstrings' leaders.
Arrival
In 745 BC, the surviving Sevenstrings found themselves on the Lamordian coast of the Sea of Sorrows. Rather than destroy them, the malfunctioning portal had delivered them to the Demiplane of Dread.
Colmarr - blinded in both eyes, one arm mangled and one leg gone - was among their number. Thanks to the efforts of his followers he not only survived, but managed to replace his missing bodyparts with technomagical devices, including a pair of artificial eyes. As the Sevenstrings proceed with their mission, Colmarr is still among their greatest leaders. For better or for worse.
