Growing up in a broken Richemuloise home, Clyde Banoliér succeeded as a clockmaker selling his mechanical wonders to the wealthy Dementlieuse nobility in Port-a-Lucine where his alcoholic father had floundered. Having little love or attachment for his patrons, Clyde instead withdrew into his own little world, wanting to craft his own little brother. Clyde's obsession and the attentions of the Dark Powers eventually enabled him to craft Marcel Banoliér, a dread clockwork golem. As damaged as Clyde's psyche was, his attentions on his "little brother" were less than even, leaving Marcel feeling hollow. When Clyde could not give Marcel the soul he demanded, the golem went on a rampage, destroying Clyde's shop. Clyde fled into the night, abandoning both his shop and his "brother".[1]

Clyde currently resides in a small asylum in Mordent. He is clearly mad, often ranting comprehensively or going catatonic for long periods. He lives and breathes in his own personal shell, with little response to the outside world except for a few specific stimuli that remind him of his previous life. The weight of what has happened also presses heavily on his mood.[2]
