Shalkala are said to be a type of Barovian fey asking as tempters of men, attempting to trick men into following them into the forest. There, the shakala exhort their thralls into dances within rings of fungus or moss. Those foolish enough to partake in such dances find their memories altered such that the affected men think the shakala are their close companions. Those afflicted by memory alteration serve the shakala as trusted guardians for the rest of their mortal lives.^[1]
