A shadow mastiff is a malicious outsider having the size and shape of a particularly big dog with sleek black fur and a large maw lined with sharp teeth. They hail from the Plane of Shadow. Though evil aligned outsiders, shadow mastiffs do not have the Evil Subtype[1] and therefore do not have reality wrinkles if encountered in the Demiplane of Dread.
Shadow mastiffs are skilled predators that prefer to hunt and attack under the cover of darkness or shadow, for they can become fully concealed in any lighting condition save for total daylight. The baying of a shadow mastiff can causing panic in anybody who hears the howl, even from several hundred feet away.[1]
Shadow mastiffs may be encountered in the Shadow Rift[2].

Your bastard son has acquired a trio of mastiffs as black as night. Their baying suffices, in the absence of a steeling bard, to break our human ranks. In a fight they attack from the shadows and have each other’s back. If they could be cornered, we Narrulve would rip them to shreds. But they are not mere dogs. They are preternaturally intelligent, masters of our own guerrilla tactics, and disappear into the slightest shadow.
