Nereids are beautiful and lithe[1] fey[2] who are nonetheless counted among the elemental-kin to water elementals.[1] As such, nereids are native to the Elemental Plane of Water[1][2], the vast majority of nereids being female.[1] Playful and erratic[1], nereids have been accused of drowning men. Although they can drown with a kiss[1] or by touch[2], the reputation for all nereids may seems undeserved. Although usually chaotic, only about a quarter are evil, with another quarter being good and the dominant majority being neutral.[1] And whereas nereids can demonstrate playful and erratic behavior[1], they also demonstrate shyness and elusive behavior.[2] So while it is true some will entice sailors to their dooms[1], nereids will often only attack under dire circumstances.[2]
Special Defenses and Weaknesses
More often, a mortal might seek to capture or otherwise detain a nereid. Besides her last line of defense that ends in death for the transgressor[1], a nereid has several other special powers to enable her escape and defense. Nereids are naturally concealed in the water[3], and can appear virtually invisible.[1] Though often used for play and pleasure[1], nereids' magical power give them control over water that can be employed for defensive purposes.[1][3] They can also speak with animals as per the spell[3], and keep a variety of pet animals for company and for protection.[1][2] These include creatures with formidable combat abilities, such squids[2] (including giant squids[1]), octopi[2] (including giant octopi[1]), dire eels[1], giant otters[1], giant leeches[1], dolphins[1], porpoises[3], and even water elementals[3].
Despite a nereid's evasiveness and unusual defenses, a nereid can be rendered all but helpless should her special white shawl be captured. A nereid whose shall is destroyed will too perish soon after.[1][1] Consequently, the ruthless and cruel can exploit this vulnerability to ensure cooperation.[1][1] Such was how the vile Captain Raoul Dumont controlled the Souragnien nereid Flowswift.[4]
Outside of the Plane of Water
Nereids may from time to time visit and explore the Material Plane[3] or may for reasons of their own seek to escape the Plane of Water or even be exiled from it.[1] Under any of these conditions, a nereid could be drawn into the Demiplane of Dread

A nereid summoned to the Land of Mists may become corrupted into a Bloody Mary.[5] Despite the race's origins in the Plane of Water, nereids can also be encountered in the Drowning Deep[6], where they generally oppose Virundus.[7]
