Espionage is the research and the discovery of knowledge by those who do not want to be seen so doing lest their work be impeded or stopped. It entails the deception of those who might not otherwise wish to share information and of those who might otherwise act to prevent the gathering of information. Espionage is undertaken on the part of a party who seeks knowledge of some other party who is then targeted.
