Disfiguration concerns visible imperfections of form or appearance. The imperfection may be acquired, such as a scar or a lost body part, or may be congential, such as a birthmark or a club foot. Deformation is subcategory of disfiguration.

Minor disfigurements may often be easily hidden, whereas major ones are usually difficult to conceal. Consequently, individuals who are disfigured are not all readily recognised as such.

Disfigurements and the disfigured tends to be viewed perjoratively, but exceptions abound. scars acquired in battle are often proudly borne and those who bear them are often admired. tattoo and the tattooed are also well seen among certain classes and ethnic groups. Still, there usually remains a threshold of scarring or tattooing beyond which the disfigurement again is viewed perjoratively.

Individuals who are significantly disfigured tend to have an Outcast Rating. The effects of this rating are held in suspense so long a the disfigurement can be successfully hidden.
