The Buchvold family is one of the old noble families of Barovia. As with the other noble families, the Buchvold family is in decline as its wealth and renown wane and its remaining descendants disperse throughout the Demiplane of Dread. Also like its fellow Barovian noble families(other than the von Zaroviches), the Buchvold family lacks any extant land claims in Barovia^[1].

According to Strahd's retelling of the events of the massacre at wedding of Sergei von Zarovich of 351 BC, several of the Buchvolds attended the wedding to fall at the hands of Leo Dilisnya in a coup attempt^[2]. Despite this loss of live, some of the Buchvolds must have survived or not gone, as in 542 BC Baroness Zorah Buchvold sent word to Strahd of the arrival of Azalin Rex to Barovia and requested his help. In one of his memories, Strahd wrote of her influence as the reason for the success of the land of her husband, Baron Cazimir Latos^[3]
