Afflicted Kender are Kender who have, due to some terrible trauma, lost the innocence, fearlessness and cheerful attitude for which their people are normally known. On Krynn, Afflicted Kender first came to be when their nation of Kendermore was destroyed in a massive Dragon attack. On the Demiplane of Dread, Afflicted Kender are those who managed to escape Lord Soth's vile experiments, which turned the ones not fortunate enough to escape into Kender Vampires.

Whereas a normal Kender would "borrow" things with no malice aforethought and be appalled by the accusation of theft, an Afflicted Kender who takes something from another person would know perfectly well that they are stealing something and why. Afflicted Kender often strike those familiar with normal Kender as being silent, furtive, and disquieting due to the lack of the exuberance, curiosity and innocence for which their people are known. Instead of these qualities, Afflicted Kender frequently have a joyless and starkly pragmatic outlook, being mainly concerned with their survival -- no matter the cost to anyone else.

On Krynn, at least, many groups are investigating ways of restoring Afflicted Kender to true Kender; on the Demiplane of Dread, there are no known efforts of the sort.
