Once per year, Baron Urik von Kharkov makes one of the women of Valachan his bride. This is usually decided at random by lottery. Those unfortunate enough to be selected usually have a lifespan after measured only in months.[1] Each year, the candidate wife is selected from a different town.[2] The bridal lottery and its aftermath cause the Valachani unparalleled anxiety.[1]
