Anitella is an NPC from the adventure module Thoughts of Darkness. While she is a potential ally against the illithids that comprise the primary adversaries in the module, her torture and transformation at their hands has left her bitter and obsessed with revenge. Once a human rogue, she was turned into a Greater Broken One, and the transformation corrupted her sense of decency and left her mad.[1]
Biography
Originally from Barovia, Anitella was once a human rogue of Chaotic Good alignment. On good terms with a number of members of the Brotherhood of Contemplative Power, she was especially close to Lord Drassak.[1] Following Lyssa von Zarovich's theft of the Rod of Houtras (known to the Brotherhood as the Sacred Barrier),[2], Anitella bribed the Vistani to take her and Lord Drassak to Bluetspur to retrieve the rod for the Brotherhood.[1]
Through sneakiness and guile, Anitella and Drassak learned the High Master Illithid's sinister plot to take over the Illithid God-Brain using the Apparatus triggered by the Rod. Anitella and Drassak retrieved the Rod, but Drassak was not satisfied with its mere capture. Rather, he wanted to destroy the Apparatus and steal the Apparatus manual possessed by the mind flayers. After Anitella hid the Rod and they returned to complete their new goals, Anitella and Drassak were captured by the mind flayers.[2]
Drassak was transformed into a vampire and then an illithid vampire. The mind flayers attempted to wrench the Rod's location from Anitella's mind, but her wild talent prevented their success. Sent to the mind flayers' laboratories for torture and experimentation, Anitella was changed into an octopus-headed Greater Broken One. The transformation drove her to a deranged state (and Neutral Evil alignment), rendering her obsessed with avenging herself against the mind flayers. She was eventually liberated from captivity by the Shattered Brethren.[3]
Role in Thoughts of Darkness
Anitella seeks to align herself with the player characters in order to thwart the High Master and Lyssa, retrieve the Rod of Houtras, liberate the Shattered Brethren, and save Drassak. However, she is quite ruthless (when she is not outright delusional) in the fabrications and manipulations (intentional or not) she will come up with in order to achieve her goals. She accompanies the player characters for a time, but she is captured and must be rescued from the labs. At the end of the module, when Drassak's fate has been revealed, she elects to stay behind in Bluetspur.[4]
