An alienist is a psychologist specialising in the study of madness and related mental conditions including recurrent nightmares. The ability of the alienist to cure the trouble mind is not god given. It is not born born of the harnessing of energies from without or within. The method of the alienist is not that of clerics, wizards, or psions. The alienist's method is grounded in superior knowledge of the mind, knowledge that has been hard won, often through bitter experience. The alienist is the master of a body of knowledge and of techniques that bring that knowledge to bear. Hypnosis is only most obvious of these techniques.
