The Loup du Noir (skin-changer) is a Werebeast phenotype, a variant of the common Werewolf, although the form of the lu du noir specifically resembles a dire wolf. Loup du noir are unique in that they willingly transform into wolves by donning wolf pelts. Like traditional lycanthropy, the state of the loup du noir is a curse transmissible via bite or by birth, yet this lycanthrope's transfiguration is self-induced. The addicting state of the wolf compels loup du noir to come back to their pelt and repeatedly transform[1].
Loup du noir typically come from solitary walks of life, such as woodsmen or hunters, though sometimes small collectives such as families or hunter groups may together know the esoteric secrets of becoming loup du noir[1]. One such group is the boyarsky of Vorostokov, led (and having initially been transformed) by Gregor Zolnik[2].
