Destruction need not be utter annihilation. But it is the utter ruin of the essence of the destroyed. A violin that is subject to destruction may be reduced to an unrecognisable pile of ash or it may be reduced to a recognisable pile of wood. Either way, it will never again be used by the hands of the violinist to play music. The deanimation of a construct by damage or of a vampire by a stake through the heart is not destruction. Nothing exceptional is required to effect their reanimation. The destruction of a construct puts its parts beyond all hope of repair. The destruction of a vampire is reducing it with sunlight to ash. The deanimation of the living is, however, destruction. It is reversible only through the extraordinary means of a raise dead spell. A living creature that is deceased is destroyed. Destruction does admit of varying degrees of thoroughness. The destruction of an individual can include not only his or her life but his or her corpse, putting him or her beyond the reach of a raise dead spell and quite possibly beyond the reach of a resurrection spell. But there is still a wish spell for those willing to tempt the Dark Powers.
