Alois Smythe was the father of Michael Smythe and Salome Merryweather-Smythe, and grandfather of Aleister Smythe, Bernard Merryweather, Dolor Merryweather and Serenity Merryweather. He may have been the first member of his family to join the Fraternity of Shadows. Although he failed to become an Umbra and so achieve immortality, he pressured his son, and later his grandson by said son, into joining. In contrast, he dismissed his daughter's chances of joining and discouraged her.
