Law enforcement is the upholding of the law, which is to say, the imposition of the will of state upon its citizenry. Law enforcement includes investigation of crimes by the police, the arrestation by the police of suspects, the judgement by trial of the accused, and punishment by state agents such as jailors or executioners of the condemned.
