The Devil's Dreams___Chapter Two
The Delapore Estate, the next morning-
Leaving the guesthouse after breakfast, the party set out for the morning’s journey- a walk through the hills to visit the miner, Gustus Flynn. Gustus is, from what you all have been told by Crespin the major-domo, the only one of four miners to return from a previous expedition into the caves below the estate.
In Crespin’s words: ‘'The poor old fellow’s mind is cracked- just gone. He never was very clear about what happened down there, but my master paid him just the same and sent him on his way. I don’t know if Gustus can help you or not, but I’ve given Zandor directions to his cabin.’’
The weather today is fine and clear, with a cool breeze blowing from the north.
A little while ago your party crossed the stone fence that marks the edge of the Delapore lands. Down a little dell and up over the next hill lies the trail to the miner’s cabin, if Crespin’s directions prove true.
Everline-
From your vantage point in a big oak atop a high hill south of the estate, you see half-dozen men leave the estate, crossing over a stone fence and not going down the main road. You notice that one of them is as short a young boy, but twice the girth of the average man. Another wears a curved sword at his side- no, two swords. One is dressed more gaily than his fellows, and strides ahead of the others. They are getting closer to your tree perch, but show no sign of having noticed you.

Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

Bennedict huddles, chilled under his cloak. "Good to get out for a morning constitutional," he says, trying not to let teeth chatter. "Not much call for it in the city. I'll be glad to enjoy the fresh air-."
He cuts off as he feels his shoe slip into something softer than dirt, looking in disgust at the manure now covering his nice shoes. Cursing, he sets to clean it off with the end of his cane.

"Of course," Benn mutters, "It would be a damned shame if we ever knew what the hell was actually going on."

'Interesting-looking bunch,' Everline thinks as she quietly draws back among the oak's branches. 'Let's have an earful an' an eyeful of them before I say how-do, shall I?'
The girl becomes very still, fading in among the oak's leaves and twigs. She keeps her eyes half-shuttered, one hand on the hilt of her morningstar without drawing it.
(OOC: Hide check: 24. Critical success. ^^ Fun...)

Karim feels the morning breeze more than the others since he is used to more hot weather.
"I do hope the miner Gustus can help us despite his...mental condition."
Turning to Drogio says:
"Do you think you can help the poor man with a spell or anything Dorgio? Maybe if you manage to help him get over his shock he can be more useful and remember more details."

Zandor smiles at Karim.
"If Dorgio cannot find some...magic spell...perhaps a song may sooth his mind well enough that his tongue will loose for us. If not,"
Zandor reaches into his sack and produces a silver alcohol flask.
"we can always lubricate him and loosen him up that way."
The bard smiles wider.
"Come! This way to ol' Gustus's place."

"It depends on what has afflicted out friend," Dorgio says while trying vainly to rub away his headache through his eyelids. He may have been one of the last to leave the party, but his tenets demanded he be one of the first awake to croak the Morninglord's praises in a voice that wasn't so much hungover and still drunk.
"If he is only afraid, I could pray for a spell to remove his dread, though that may take some time. Zandor's methods might be quicker. But maybe he only needs to be speaking with someone who doesn't think he's mad for having seen whatever it was he saw."

"it's somewhat pointless to speculate before we've met him." Benn adds. "his brains could be addelled."
His shoes relatively clean, he now wipes the end of the cane in the grass.

Alain notices a wood rat partially concealed in the grass to the left of the trail. The animal is belly up and motionless.

Re: The Devil's Dreams___Chapter Two
Dofur has remained quiet for most of the time since the incident with the crazy girl.
He's been trotting behind the others, his head hanging.
Yesterday, at dinner, he has aired his anger and concern twice,
erupting like a brooding volcano, then falling silent again,
"We are cursed! All this calamity that has befallen us. You are cursed,
and your dread has now passen on to me as well!"
That said, DOfur has not especially been craving for the others' company,
much in contrary to his usual light nature,
Now, he just stares at the miner, as if looking for signs of evil,
and mumbling a prayer in his Dwarven language.
(Detect Evil on Gustus.)

Re: The Devil's Dreams___Chapter Two
The party walks on, reaching the miner's cabin in an hour or so.
The small wood and stone structure squats in the lee of a crescent shaped hill.
Out front is garden plot badly in need of weeding. There is no sound from within the little house, but puffs of white smoke drift up from the crooked chimney. The rough wooden door swings partly open as the dwarf approaches it. An old man's face appears in the gap of the doorway, a maggot-pale visage with long , tangled beard the color of woodsmoke. The man's eyes are sunken so deeply that at first glance the space beneath his beetling brow looks empty.
The old man speaks, his words jumbled and rushed-
''Pits! Who, you? I don't....dwarf! What's this, what's this? You bring me somethin'?"

Dorgio raises a hand in greeting, but he is careful not to get too close to Gustus just yet. "You are Gustus, yes?" He steps a little closer and holds out an unlit cigarillo. "Smoke?"

Gustus shakes his old gray head.
''No, no smoke for me. Gettin' hard to breathe as it is. Who are ye, an' what do y'want with me?"

Re: The Devil's Dreams___Chapter Two
A crazed look comes over the old miner's pale face, and he begins to shake like a leaf in a windstorm.
'' ARRRRRRRGGHHHHH!"
Gustus reaches behind the door and brings forth a pickaxe, which he waves
about as he rants-
'' I told the masked man, and I'll tell you the same. You damned fools go down there and IT will take you all like it took my friends. The DARKNESS IS HUNGRY, and it will eat you up...BLOOD AND BONE!"
The miner then hops back and, with a violent jerk, slams the door in Dorgio's face.
