Help me fill the House of Gryffon Hill

Post by TheArcaneWeirdo »

I'm writing a fanfic called A Ghost Story - Which is, as one can understand, about ghosts. Specifically, it's about Eresmus van Richten (5e version where he returned as a ghost and is part of the team) infiltrating Gryffon Manor to spy on Lord Godefroy.
The hallmark of the story is supposed to be the ghostcentrism. Most of the characters are, and most of the plot is driven by, ghosts. There'd be a subplot revolving around the Weathermay-Foxgrove twins, but even it is initiated by a ghost's actions. The point is ghosts.
But to do this properly, I need more ghosts.
As it stands now, I have
1) Eresmus himself
2) Lord Godefroy
3) Gilbert, a boy who died a couple of years ago in an accident and desperately misses his little brothers. Shows Eresmus around the manor and helps him investigate. Will do anything to break free and reunite with his family. Also fond of soccer and shrugs strangely often.
4) Mathilda Mournesworth, a scholar of the arcane who was killed centuries ago in a failed experiment trying to discover knowledge not meant for mortal minds. Appears especially spooky because said experiment ended in an explosion, which she was 'preserved' in the middle of. Ducks were apparently involved, and thus she hates them all and had sworn revenge upon them.
5) Lord Godefroy's daughter, whatever her name is.
6) Antonin Madren (It stands to reason he met his end in sufficient proximity to Mordentshire for Godefroy to capture him, so I'm adding him for the drama).

But who else?
I mean, it's the most haunted house in the history of haunted houses. 300 years of ghosts. What have we got?
Like, I could come up with more OCs like Gilbert and Mathilda, but what's the established lore?

Alice Weathermay (Lord Jules' daughter and the twins' mother) is canonically under Godefroy's control and used by him to extort favors from Daniel Foxgrove.

Yeah, heard about her.
What do we know about her other than that? Like, backstory, personality, type of ghost?

You want ghosts? I've got all the ghosts you can want right here:

What about Luigi's Mansion?

And while we're on the subject, here's a selection from Disney's Haunted Mansion:

And third, but not final, my personal favorites... the ghosts from 13 Ghosts:

If that's not enough for you, check out the Ravenloft Gazetteer Vol. 3. There's 13 noble houses outlined there that you could grab some inspiration from and use to fill as the inhabitants of Gryphon Hill.

Given how the House on Gryphon Hill works, I think you're definitely going to find lots of unique ghosts. The Timothy clan of werewolves, for instance, started in Mordent, so Godefroy might have some werewolf ghosts from that clan to act as bruisers. Or he might have ghosts of Boritsi & Dilisnya ancestors, or wererat Renier ancestors (the House itself was built by Jacques Renier iirc, he was the progenitor of the Renier family and a famed adventurer) which Godefroy can use to get information and inform his dealings with other Darklords. Many a sailor that might have died in Mordentshire-by-the-Sea might be there too, as well as dead adventurers that might have tried to take down Godefroy or who gallivanted around Mordent and met an untimely end unrelated to Godefroy.
