Great Coliseum of Lekar and CotN: Vampires

Post by Mephisto of the FoS »

I am in the process of printing the Great Coliseum of Lekar, the model is by Creeple God Foundry (death-coliseum-arena).
I oversized it to 154,49% though as it felt more fitting.

As I was working on it, I understood that in the adventure with Jander Sunstar from Children of the Night: Vampires there is another Arena that is abandoned and in bad shape. I believe to have the arena being abandoned misses the chance of having the adventureres witness the "spectacle" of gladiatorial matches or even unexpectedly participate in one of them while fighting vampyres. I believe it works better with the PCs having to fight throught he vampyre infested underground of the arena and perhaps resurfacing and fighting their way through gladiators or even beasts. While I am writting this I remembered also Quinlan from The Strain ( Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan series) it would be nice to have Jander fighting in the arena for a bit. That way the rumors going around about a "vampire infestation" becomes grounded as the vampyres become exposed in front of a large audience.

Also there is the thing of urban planning, how many large arena's does Lekar have?

I believe the writters of Gazetteer II made a good decision of mentioning/creating the Great Coliseum of Lekar, probably inspired by The Charnel House adventure in Children of the Night: Vampires as well as Drakovs place of origin, Taladas and the Imperial arena of the city of Kristophan. OK I found the answer to that, Gazetteer II mentions there are two abandoned arenas in Lekar's slums.
:(
But still... think about the action an adventure like that could have.

While they didn't all exist at the same time (and Lekar is tiny by comparison in canon), Rome had at least a dozen arenas: the Flavian Amphitheatre, the Amphitheatrum Castrense, the Ludus Magnus, the Amphitheatrum Statilii Tauri, the Amphitheatrum Neronis, the Amphitheatrum Caligulae, the Circus Varianus, the Circus of Nero, the Circus of Maxentius, the Circus Maximus, the Circus Flaminius, and the Circus Agonalis, and I've probably missed a couple more.

One potential justification pops up in the description of Lekar in Death Unchained. The Laborers' Quarter has been "levelled by fire" multiple times, so the ruined arena(s) could have been abandoned in the rebuilding of the Quarter, seen as too much effort to rebuild again after the second or third time the area around it burnt down.

As I print it larger by 54% than the stl file it takes 1 day for each part. So far I have printed 3 corner pieces and each piece uses 580gr of filament. So with one roll of filament I can print almost 2 corner pieces.

That's great Mephisto! Keep up the good work. We're cheering for you. Please post a couple of pics of the corner pieces if you want.

I found this mp of Lekar. It seems to me like a nice development of the city, with an addition of a new quarter on the west bank of the Vuchar river and a bridge to control river traffic. Also we can see the largest building in the city, the Great Coliseum of Lekar. There is also a small island north of Castle Draccipetri.

Things probably missing (since I can't read the map info) the two abandoned arenas mentioned in Gaz II and in CotN:Vampires

If anyone in here created this I would be grateful for a better resolution image.

According to this page, that map was created by Richard deRoiville, who is one of the admins of the Ravenloft Cartographic Society.

Indeed, that is my partner Richard's work, it is also referenced in the Ravenloft Cartographical topic pinned above. If you still don't find the high res version, PM me. It is a part of his personal campaign, although we intend to write a Cartulary for Lekar. When....I could not say :(
