Mask of the Sundered Heart

Post by Mephisto of the FoS »

While doing my research for a new article I am working on based on the TSR Collector Cards I bumped to the following magical item, the Mask of the Sundered Heart.

I know it is referred to Casimir from the Heart of Midnight novel but I found the following AI overview in a search engine.
"Mask of the Sundered Heart" refers to an item within the Ravenloft campaign setting, specifically the Curse of Strahd adventure path for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition. It's a legendary artifact, a mask that grants its wearer various benefits related to the undead, and is tied to the story of Count Strahd von Zarovich.
More details about "Mask of the Sundered Heart":
Source:
"Mask of the Sundered Heart" is part of the Curse of Strahd adventure path for D&D 5th Edition, which is an adaptation of the original Ravenloft module.
Artifact:
It's a legendary artifact, meaning it's a powerful and rare item that can greatly impact the game.
Undead Benefits:
The mask grants benefits related to undead creatures, possibly including things like increased strength, resistance to certain damage types, or the ability to communicate with or control undead.
Story Significance:
The mask's presence and the knowledge of its location are tied to Strahd's story and his desire to control the undead in his realm.
Location:
In Curse of Strahd, the mask can be found within Castle Ravenloft.
In essence, "Mask of the Sundered Heart" is a significant artifact in the Ravenloft setting, specifically within the Curse of Strahd adventure path, that offers powerful abilities to its wearer while also serving as a plot point tied to the story of Count Strahd.
Where is this in CoS?
And if it really exists as 5e canon, why did they make this item about undead?

Mephisto,

I looked through my CoS adventure & did not find any reference to a mask of the sundered heart, or nay artifact like that. I bet it's getting mixed up with the Heart of Sorrow, that huge heart in the castle that absorbs damage. Often AI makes mistakes like this unless you give very specific prompts.

Example, I asked it for some info about Inza recently, and it gave me the completely wrong domain (think it said she was Darklord of Ghastria or something weird like that). When I corrected it by saying she was Darklord of Sithicus, it gave me the "yes, you are completely correct" comment. Not sure what AI system you were using, but even with ChatGPT, and the plus version at that, I get some weird answers sometimes unless I give very specific prompts.

I would say, though, the item sounds pretty cool. Wouldn't mind using that in one of my Ravenloft games for like a vampire BBEG!

A typical case of AI hallucination. There is no such item in CoS. It's not too surprising, since Curse of Strahd is by leaps and bounds the most well-known Ravenloft book on the internet, so an AI would naturally bundle everything vaguely RL-related with it, unless there is more definite information, which in this case, there isn't.

In short: don't trust everything an AI says.

Very sound advice. AI can be a really cool tool w/ D&D. I've designed some neat magic items & even had it help me create an adventure in Invidia using the backdrop, briefly discussed in the Evil Eye, regarding the towns of Valetta & Beltis. But you have to take the lead as a dance partner so to speak.

I have very much enjoyed using it to create character portraits. But your point is well taken. Takes a lot of practice to get things working with it.

As a proponent of AI, I will tell you about one of its main limitations: Hallucination. The AI we use is not real AI, it is a Language Model that tries to predict the next few letters based on probability and context.
It is very useful BUT you should take what it takes with a grain of salt.

I just made a search on a search engine, I didn't purposely used an AI. Google on its own gave me the info under "AI overview". Never used ChatGPT, I prefer looking stuff on my own than trusting an "android"...

I am creating it for my article but I will take a completely different approach, based on the Heart of Midnight novel where it appears.
