The coffer had some sort of minor enchantment cast upon it, now fading away.
The ring's much more potent magic appears to be necromantic in nature. Strong, but latent or inactive, as if waiting to be triggered.

Roll Knowledge : Local, and you may add a synergy bonus (+2) for Knowledge Arcana at five ranks or more.
DC 20
If you fail, you may retry later with a Gather Info skill check, same synergy bonus allowed.
But that eats time.

Note
Lord Skybolt is still active--he gave me instructions to answer questions for Alain, if he wasn't online.

HORNSBY'S SERVICE
News on that, from a PM from RocEtr.
If Benn wants a gifted cleric (one with real divine-magical power) to perform all the rites--and thus protect Hornsby's remains from necromancy--he can avail himself of the services of a priestess who works with/for Thom.
Charlotte wore black in mourning, but we did not RP or mention the funeral in the IC thread, but merely noted in OOC that Benn would arrange services.
Does this fit with what you want, Adam?
Hornsby burial this gametime afternoon/evening?
Or do you prefer a hasty burial in the early morning (and so already accomplished), conducted by a chaplain/junior priest with an acolyte assisting?

Booooooks! Books about things better left unread!
Should I roll persuasion or something for Raen to get those books? Studying the gate-book and the rites of Zhakata seems the proper course for the time.
Does anyone tell Raen about the portal? From what I understand so far... our guy is into forbidden and evil rites \ magic and wants to escape Ravenloft.

In reference to earlier questions: Benn's an atheist, but he has enough respect for Hornsby to see to his wishes. A short, functional Ezran service is most likely, and it's likely been done after he performed his examination of the body for any evidence.
Per the books: any of them ringing any bells regarding Wolutha or Matyr? Or just notable to Benn?
Per the map: Have we established a pattern from what we're seeing there? A standard area of operation for what we presume to be Matyr?
Some dice rolls for if necessary. You have my sheet to look up any appropriate modifiers.

The Woman-Killer is Dorgio's book about the strange case of Jonathon Matyr.Adam wrote:In reference to earlier questions: Benn's an atheist, but he has enough respect for Hornsby to see to his wishes. M, the initial given in the notebook Alain found in an alcove with other texts, could stand for Matyr.
As for the rest of the books, Benn's drawing blanks. Obscure material, or is he not thinking straight these days? Stress? Grief?
In any event, though he's not coming up with any useful lore, something about at least a couple those titles , or maybe the combination of them all, gives him a bad feeling.
If only he had a look at the books, then maybe he could...
RE the map, the pattern isn't definite, but between places and times, it seems plausible that a man or monster operating out of either the Grim Bastion or that house/building Kat noted could have committed the murder of Annabelle, burglarized Benn's home and killed Hornsby, and stalked Kat. Maybe the attempt at the office, too, though he'd have to be moving quickly to cover the distances. Riding a horse, perhaps. Not knowing the precise times of events makes analysis harder.
He'd have to be fast on his feet, and access to a gondola or rowboat would be important if he wanted to avoid being seen going over bridges.
The party might want to check out both locations.

It wouldn't be Benn if he didn't throw a 1 on a knowledge check regarding a subject in which he's supposed to be an expert...

Actually, does Raen know any of those magical books? He has a lot of knowledge Arcana and knowledge (planes).
Here are two rolls.

The first is a probable failure unless the DC is pretty low but the 2nd...

Why does that seem so familiar?
Didn't some sage write about something to do with an entity with that name...

Too bad there isn't an ebay back then! We could have gotten millions if we auction these books! Which would have last for like 1 minute before the others come or sent assassins after us.
