I'm of the opinion that violence among humans is a constant- all that's changing is that there are now more people around. Ergo, the number of overly violent people is increased in proportion.

Given that the media is able to take a single event and broadcast it to everyone, it makes it seem like there's more violence happening. It's really the same amount.

Archedius is right; the increasing populations and expansive news coverage are only just beginning to show us the scope of the problem as it always has been (study historical rates of violence and we're on par for almost any age). These sorts of things have been happening since the day Cain slew Abel (or whatever you believe). People have been scapegoating everything from dime novels to comics to movies to TV to video games and RPGs. It's time to look in a mirror at the real cause: humanity itself. And medicating the problem isn't going to help by itself; there is no easy answer or miracle drug that will make things all better. The path to healing is long and painful and requires long, hard work. But it's better than the alternative. And I speak from experience on all of this.

Now let's drop the subject and get back to horror that doesn't hurt anyone but those who get stuck with a flop (I'm looking at you, EtCR!).

I tend to use horror of all types, although I am sparing with the overly horrible blood and guts scenes not because I get squemish but simply because I find it can only be used effectively when the player does not expect it and with correctly built up suprise... Otherwise it becomes comical.

I love to use horror to force the player to brace for a moral conflict or dire event and then see the reactions. Players can begin to judge things incorrectly and each horror check can be distracting from the true path. Only once it has faded or settled some should it become easy to sort through in some fashion.

I'm a big fan of Lovecraft's brand of weird fiction.

I also enjoy classic Gothic horror.

Splatter doesn't really count as horror in my book- but it can make good comedy or action movie fare.
Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.
