The dog was the familiar of an evil necromancer. You guys found the dog after its master had already been ripped apart by those werewolves. It had tried to escape, but been injured and chased into a hollow log, where it was cornered.

The dog's collar was magical, and allowed it to establish a life-link with a chosen host....and it chose Franz. :azalin:
