4Edition. Do you like it?

Discussing all things Ravenloft

Do you like 4th edition?

Yes, more than 3rd/3.5 edition, more than all other editions. D&D at it's best.

Yes, but 3rd/3.5 (or 2nd, or OD&D) was better

I remember this one time Nathan and his band of hawkmen seized control of a giant war rocket and rammed it into a city.

Amusingly enough, I have actually single-handedly destroyed a warship full of ghouls twice. Although the first time it was with a longsword.

That rocket thing must have been my evil twin Nahtan, for whom I can take no responsibility whatsoever.

*Not counting buffs. And to be fair, the longsword did most of the work.

On weaknesses and 4E:

Indeed, weaknesses put a bit more work on the DM. Downplay them and the fight is tougher. Overplay them and the fight is easy.
So, there are two solutions:
1. Remove weaknesses although. Downside: they make the monster less of an individual and in the vampire's case deviate far from what people expect from vampires.
2. Do some thinking and balance the encounter (based on the PC's powers) with the monster-with-weakness accordingly. Add a few more minionlike monsters. Add a power. Downside: You may be wrong.

4E goes for the 1st solution. The easy one. Pfffft!
I go for then 2nd solution!

Just some links to read and think about.

The first is official, but requires DDI subscription. Thankfully, the relevant passage doesn't:
http://www.wizards.com/DnD/Article.aspx ... 09December
One phenomenon we observed early in the life of this edition of the game was that, when presented with a list of powers, players tended not to consider options that didn’t appear on that list. Some players felt that their options were actually more limited in the game than they had been in past editions, because they didn’t allow themselves to think past the power cards.
There's also the posts here:
http://www.thealexandrian.net/creations ... anics.html
and a related one here:
http://www.thealexandrian.net/archive/a ... l#20070820
That have some interesting critiques of the 4e mentality.

One interesting thing to add is later in the first article, the author discusses the terrain powers introduced in DMG2 as a way they're trying to "solve" players being subconsciously limited in actions by powers. Their solution is adding more powers...
