In my last Ravenloft game, my players managed to work out that Dominic d'Honaire was the darklord of Dementlieu, but that killing him would likely plunge the country into Reign of Terror style chaos. One of them decided that he didn't care--that letting someone as evil as d'Honaire live when he had the chance to stop him was the same as condoning d'Honaire's evil. There might have been a little mental manipulation from Dominic involved. The PC overcame Dominic's mind control, pulled out his experimental "revolver," and shot him in the head at point-blank range. Then shot him again. And again. That was a failed Dark Powers check for wrath, I tell you what. The Living Brain became the next darklord, but that's a story for another time.
As for how many they've met... Over the course of nine years of various Ravenloft campaigns, my players met all of the Core darklords except Alfred Timothy and Hazlik. They also managed run-ins with Frantisek Markov, Dr. Dominiani, Baron Evensong, Ankhtepot, and Meredoth. Plus probably some more I'm forgetting right now.
