Getting back to the idea of Dread Companions, I always looked at them as sort of like having the character's id as a physical form. Here you have a personification of the base desires and instincts of the character, without any of the morality (i.e. not killing or taking medicine from the children's hospital) that the character would have.
BTW. who says you can tell who is evil or not in Ravenloft? You can only tell by the actions of the individual involved, and even the most evil companion still might not act in such a way as it triggers it off for the charcters. The idea of the rumours of such an companion, might be considered urban myths - where does it say that the character doesn't have a 'it won't happen to me complex'?
