A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Zumba eventually sees Vincent from atop the roof, and the figures escaping to the swamps. He relaxes and then approaches the old man.
"Thank you, Sir." he says tersely.
Then, pointing at the sword the knight carries, and showing the one he had found earlier, he asks
"Tell me, is there anything evil in this sword? I see you carry a similar one. What are they? Do you know these men, and why they dress like this?"

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Vincent:
The zombies do not stop for Vincent's cry of "Hey!", but one of them turns its head to 'look' at him. The eerie thing is not so much that the thing appears to see him just fine despite its eyes being stitched closed, but rather that it is running effortlessly, staying in step with its comrades despite the fact that its head stays turned.
The swamp looms up ahead. Vincent can see three small children at the edge of the fetid mud, one of them holding a fishing rod. All three look up and around when they hear the pouding of approaching feet. When they spot the zombies, they stiffen in shock and scream. Two of them dash off, but the third -- a painfully thin waif of a girl -- appears to be paralyzed with fear. Paralyzed with fear, and directly in the path of the oncoming zombies!
The lead creature, the one whose claws are still red with Vincent's own blood, spreads its arms wide and makes a guttural, eager sound. Metal flashes in the sun -- the three grey-skinned horrors charge on and plunge into the muck, tireless arms and legs propelling them forward and down into the mire. The little girl lies still on the ground, the mark of undead feet on her clothes, blood seeping from cuts across her chest. Her eyes roll and she whimpers feebly.
Everyone else:
The armoured Knight reaches up and tugs off his helmet. Sweat-stained, bone-white hair falls down to his shoulders and you can all see the face of the gate guard who stopped Vincent from going in. His face looks more haggard than it did before, his skin paler. Nonetheless, the old man straightens up to his full height, the very picture of dignity.
He gives Lucien a stern look and declares: "I am Alphonse Demarrier. By the grace of Our Guardian in the Mists and the kindness of the Maiden of the Swamps, I am the Guardian of this temple. None may enter save they have my permission -- or at least this is how it should be." The stern look swings to Warden Sarosse, who first goes pale and then blushes furiously.
Demarrier's eyes turn to Zumba when he asks his questions, and he shrugs. "These look to be the swords granted to any Anchorite who is ready to hold a blade in Ezra's service," the old man continues, indicating the blades. "As do I." He holds up his sword, which is silver as the others are, and also carries the sign of Ezra on the crossguard. "Who these murderers and shade-walkers are, I know not. It is no hard task to weave robes as are worn by the Guardian's faithful, and I fear that several of these blades are now... available to evil-doers."
The old man's eyebrows draw down in a dark frown. "Many Anchorites and Voodan have been slaughtered recently, by those foul walking corpses if all the stories are true, and in most cases their weapons and other valuable possessions were taken. Me, I suspect other agents have also had a hand. Agents such as came here just as you did." The frown takes all of you in. "You have fought bravely, and for that I salute you. But I can not let admiration for doughty warriors and spellcasters colour my perception. You do not yet have my permission to enter this Temple; you must leave at once. I shall contact La Gugoine and she may then pass judgment on you -- and possibly grant you permission to enter this holy place and remain."
Warden Sarosse mumbles something like "Surely they must be on our side in this", but a look from Demarrier shuts her up right away.

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Vincent slows his pursuit a bit when he sees the zombie turn his head around while keeping running. His eyes widen, wondering what else these thing can do.
As the zombies approach the children Vincent realizes he is going to be too late for whatever is going to happen, still he sprints as fast as he can towards the child still lingering in their path.
Fortunately they leave the child pretty much alone. He decides to stop his pursuit and kneels down near the child. He inspects her for serious wounds, but he does not say a word to the little girl.
If the girl is in good order to carry he picks her up looking one last time at the zombies getting away. He smiles to the little girl nervously.
He walks back with her in his arms to the church, but every part of his body hurts from the many wounds he has received. Now that the running and fighting is over he feels his drenched clothing. Fighting and running in this heat is not a good idea, he thinks and realizes he is quite thirsty.

Goren listens to the conversation, then begins walking over to the side of the rooftop, to look for Vincent. Soon, he sees him carrying something in his arms and looking in need of assistance! He turns and heads for the stairs. Souragnien "Vincent need help and fixing, I go help him."
Thus, the cleric of the Morning lord makes his out of the building and towards Vincent. Upon seeing Vincent and the child, Goren will stop Vincent. Souragnien "Vincent, here water for you, drink....... drink," handing Vincent a waterskin as he takes the little girl from his hands. He gently lays her on the ground inspecting her carefully.
Then he will heal her with a 1st level cure and the same for Vincent. As well, he will use his last waterskin to clean the girl a little and have her drink. He also does a heal check on the girl. Looking at Vincent he asksSouragnien "What, what happen of little one?"

"The necromancer must have forgotten that rule as well, sir," says Lucien.
Lucien waits until Demarrier finishes before speaking again. He knows that the proud, stubborn old man will react harshly if he gives voice to the suspicion that's in his mind. He needs to see this La Gugoine, and that won't happen if Demarrier's pride is injured -- he's seen this type of fool many times before.Rock wrote:"Who these murderers and shade-walkers are, I know not. "Of course, I'll leave until the proper authorization has been given by La Gugoine. I trust her wisdom and yours," he turns to leave. "Have no concern, Warden Sarosse. Please, see me out." As he descends the stairs with the lovely cleric, he says, "Warden, I feel I can be honest with you in a way that I clearly cannot with your superior up there." He glances back up to ensure that they're not being overheard by Demarrier. "He feels that the garments and swords were stolen. There's another possibility. Have you been stationed here long? Do you know whether any clerics have ... left Ezra's service in Souragne in recent months?"

Zumba looks at the old man and says
"I am confident we will yet merit your trust. But if our efforts here have not been enough to convince you, I will leave the temple for now. But notice that I climbed to the roof because I wanted to defend all of you from this hideous enemy, however I can contribute towards it."
He sort of bows, then turns around to leave.

Vincent is glad to give the little girl to Goren and he takes the flask greedily. He takes several gulps. "Damn this country, even the water is warm. I never thought I would say this" he says to himself "but I miss ......." he stops halfway in his sentence realizing he is talking to himself. His eyes turn to Goren to see if he heard or was too busy with the child. He quickly straightens and hands the flask back to Goren.
"In short" he says to Goren "the creatures literally stampeded over her, ignoring her. They then dove into the water, what's left of it in this heat" he gestures "and swam away."
He looks at the girl, not saying anything nor showing any emotion. "Well, good luck with her" he says to Goren "I'm going to get someone to attend to my wounds. I thank you for what you did, unfortunately it is not enough." he turns around and walks towards the church.

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Vincent & Goren:
As soon as Goren touches the little girl and sends the healing energy through her, she goes berserk. Screaming in terror, she wrenches free from the Cleric's hands and goes running off after her friends, who you both see hovering in the distance. The threesome dash to a set of run-down huts at the swamp's edge. There are boats moored there, flat-bottomed piroques made out of cypress logs.
As Vincent trudges towards the Temple, he is met by Voodan Belhomme. The Souragnien is holding his trusty weapon - for all the good it is in the hands of a non-combatant - but his face pales at the state of Vincent's injuries. "Grace of the Loah," he says as he hurries over and places his empty hand on Vincent's chest, "be upon this man. Maiden of the Swamp, embrace this man. Knit his flesh, calk his bones. Blood be inside, not out. Breath be free. Mind be untroubled." Pure wellbeing flows through Vincent as his injuries fade away completely.
"At least I can help you out a little, warrior," the Voodan says with a shamefaced grin.
Zumba & Lucien:
Warden Sarosse guides the two of you to the ground floor and hence to the doors. On your way, you note that the inside of the Marais de Tarascon Temple to Ezra is not chilled like the one in Port d'Elhour is. The only reason the air is not sweltering even worse in here than it is outside, is that all the windows you can see are wide open. All that you can see to prevent people - or worse - from just climbing in are small wooden charms, hung on string.
"Please, please forgive the Guardian," Warden Sarosse pleads as she guides you to the door. "He is possibly the best man I have ever met, but the recent events have been so terrible, and his oath does not allow him to go out and track these cowardly murderers down." For a moment, Warden Sarosse looks intensely uncomfortable, and then she blurts out: "I have been here for six, almost seven years, monsieur. Fresh out of training, I was hand-picked to come here as part of the Mission to Souragne. People have left, oui certainement, but we have always seen them off on the ships -- or seen them buried in the Souragnien vaults. No one has disappeared, save we found pieces of them to interr, at least. If there is a traitor in the flock, then... Then they must still be alive. The Guardian knows this as well as I, I assure you. It might break his heart. It might break all our hearts, if it is true."
Tears actually appear in the Anchorite's eyes, but she wipes them away with her sleeve and continues: "Here, take this with the gratitiude of the faithful of Our Guardian in the Mists." She presses a small pouch into Zumba's hand - one which you'll note contains fifty pieces of gold! "Go to the Beached Alligator Inn," she says. "It's just down the road, best place in town, with good food and wine. Wait for a messenger there; La Gugoine is out talking with the chief Voodan right now. In a few days, we are going to try a great ritual, one that combines all the power of the Loah with the might of Our Guardian in the Mists. If successful, we'll be able to make it rain. But I will inform La Gugoine of your presence as soon as she comes back, and I am sure that she will want to see you!"

Zumba receives the pouch quietly, with a dignified air. Then, as the woman seems to collapse under her nerves, he puts a hand on her shoulder and says with a deep but reassuring voice.
"Have faith in the Loah. They will preserve us in the end. Thank you for trusting in us, we shall not fail you, so help me Ovun Burundir."
He then moves out to the sun and addresses Lucien and says: "At least it seems we made some progress. Let's then go to that inn."

Re: A Stitch in Souragne - La Rue des Tristepas
Vincent looks surprised as the girl goes berserk and runs to the swamp. He stares for a moment, lost in thought, then looks at Goren and shrugs to point out he does not know what that was all about.
He turns around and walks towards the church carefully, still hurting from his wounds. As he is met by Belhomme he straightens his head tilts a little back as if suddenly not trusting the man. He sees the man react as he sees his wounds, but Vincent doesn't say anything. He stand there looking at the man. Belhomme heals him and Vincent feels his wounds close and he brightens. "Oh, I feel as reborn" he exagerates "after such harsh battles I must thank thee" he continues and dramatically drops to his knees and takes Belhomme's hand "thank you, in the name of Ezra, thank you" he yells. He looks at Belhomme and winks, to confirm his theatrical display. He stands back up and then just simply bows to the man. He walks away smiling, towards the front of the church.
On the way he passes the large hole in the group where the zombies had exploded earlier. He looks at it while walking by.
Near the melting coach he walks to his belongings. He unlocks it and opens it, checking if everything inside is undamaged. He checks every vial, piece of cloth, every item he has. He is very glad to see it is all still intact.
He looks at the church entrance and sees Zumba and Lucien talking to an anchorite, after which they walk away. "Ah" he says loudly "mademoiselle?" he asks as he walks towards her. "My apologies for the interruption mademoiselle" he says and makes a slight bow "I'm in an awfull state state as you can sees. The stains and sweat are a terrible affliction to my nose and eyes, not to mention that I haven't had the possibility to feel nice and proper for several days now." He pauses for a while "I'm sure a charming young lady as yourself" looking at her straight "would know the right place to get these properly cleaned and if" he adds "this would not be possible for some reason, could you point me out to a tailor, because I need some new clothes. It's emberassing enough to have to present myself in these" he gestures towards his clothing "to a mademoiselle of your stature". He smiles pleadingly awaiting her reply.

The red haired man is definitely stubborn, to say the least. Keeping his observations to himself about the girl for now, he walks in a nonthreatening manner towards her and her friends, curious. He doesn't want her or her friends to wander off either. The thunder in the swamp bothers him but his difficulty with speaking this language made it hard for him to explain his observations.
When he is at a safe distance from them, he stops. He calls out in Souragnien "Please, please....... I ...... I help. Not want to make her fright.......," to which he points at the little girl. Continuing, he says "I want speak her, you, if you wishing it being so. Are ,,,,,, are....... you want food? I maybe, ,,,,,,, maybe ,,,,,,," he thinks to himself If the swamp permits me to do so "if swamp permitting, I make food for you. I is healer. Yes I also is priest, but of Morninglord. I healed little one. Can we speaking?" He holds his holy symbol in his hand, showing it to them, smiling.

The children watch Goren with large, wide eyes -- and dash away from him. Soon, they are lost among the huts and hovels.

As Vincent searches his belongings, he can hear a bubbling noise from the sunken pit where the coach used to be. There, out of the black ooze, something rises. Something familiar.
It is the white stone you all brought from the swamp's edge. Black filth hisses and evaporates off of its surface as it gently continues to rise, until it once again stands as high above the earth as it did at its former resting place, white and pristine.

Lucien nods appreciately after Sarosse speaks and given Zumba the pouch. "Thank you, Warden. At the Beached Alligator Inn, then. But please--" he says, leaning forward, "--stress to La Gugoine the importance of meeting with her soon, before this new ritual you mention. Every instance of priestly magic I've seen since coming here has, well, misfired. I need to discuss it with her and you. Until then, be well, Warden."
With Zumba, he leaves the temple. Once out of earshot, he says, "I have no patience for fools like Demarrier. He's letting pride and obedience to dogma get in the way of finding answers. Still... I'm fortunate to have met you, Zumba. I wouldn't want to have encountered that nightmare alone. Where did you learn to climb like that, by the way? Most impressive."
He spots Vincent and walks over toward him as he and Zumba converse. "That was remarkably brave and foolish of you, monsieur, but I'm relieved you're well. Here..." He holds out Vincent's bag. "There wasn't time to... OH, that damnable stone! Untouched..." He crouches down to examine the white stone.
