What do you guys think of "Rules Nazis" as DMs?

Discussing all things Ravenloft

Should you stick to "the rules" when playing an RPG?

Yes! Follow the rules exactly, to the letter. They're part of the game.

No! Follow what makes gameplay flow better, if you have to break rules, its OK.

Maybe. In some cases you can ignore obviously flawed and nonessential rules, but you really should try to stick to the rules as much as possible and follow the game as proscribed.

Personally, my experience breaks this question into two sub-sets: competitive and house rules. If it's competitive and there is a tangible reward at stake, (money, literature, etc.) then the rules become paramount. For all else, have fun. If the GM is ruining the group vibe, put them in their place. If the group is bratty, and you're the GM, it might mean that your maturity level is too high for that particular group and you need to game with more experienced players.

House games get tedious when there are struggles outside the game that affect game play. But that gets into another topic: The Politics of the Group. Now that's a tough topic!!

I don't think I'd very much like playing with Vlad Drakov as my DM.

There is only one way to kill a Rules Nazi for good, and that is with a Rules Commie.

Rules Nazi: strictly enforces the rules, usually picking on some players specifically and favoring other players.

Rules Commie: strictly enforces the rules, picking on all players equally and favoring none. Game continues in grim egalitarian misery.

Sometimes if you're lucky you end up with a Rules Hippy: "dude, what rules? Have some herbal tea."

When my friends and I first started playing RPGs several yerars ago all of us played by the rules strictly. As years went by we have become more liberal. As long as everyone agrees and adheres to rules changes or omissions everything should be all gravy. The bottom line is, if it makes the game more fun than more power to you. One of my best friends was a rules lawyer but he has really lightened up as he has gotten older. But he is perhaps the most argumentative person I know next to my brother. Maybe that's why his personality doesn't bother me.
I became insane, with long intervals of horrible sanity.
