In I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin, Strahd possesses a thief and controls him in an invasion of Darkon and the kidnapping of a vampire general of the Karget (Vychen, I think). He then possesses Vychen and sends him back to sows the seeds of chaos in Darkon all the time controlling his actions and thoughts.
Information seems to come my way whether by chance or by fate, but all this means, is that I have yet to find out what will kill me and why. - The Stygian Inquirer

But didn't he hit a wall when Forlorn appeared?

And to some small extent he managed to go beyond the bounds of Barovia via mental possession.
I believe that's correct--haven't read I, Strahd: The War Against Azalin in a while, but I believe that's what happened when he tried to physically cross into Forlorn.

And he does know he's trapped, obviously--he even asks the question of Azalin after the emergence of Darkon: "Are you trapped within this land, as I am within my own?" or words to that effect.
