I am more of a DM than a player and i really do hate to kill darklords in my campaigns. I really like players to view darklords as invincible monsters that are nearly impossible to kill and make them focus on more realistic monster targets. Despite these facts, the dramatic force of a darklord's death has been proved useful in rare occasions.
A party consisted mainly of investigation like players killed the darklord of Dementlieu, by being able to resist his mind-manipulating force and by allying with the living brain to work their way through the intrigue filled streets of Port-a-Lucine. After that Dementlieu has entered in a period of political turmoil, a fine opportunity for the players to escape the domain untouched.
The other time a party of mine killed a darklord was an all-evil party of rogues in the path of corrruption who did achieve to massacre lord Soth in an epic climax battle at the top of Soth's tower during a stormy night.
