Question about Shield of Ezra

Post by HuManBing »

My PCs are meeting a cleric of Ezra (who turns out to be LG) this upcoming session. They're trying to smuggle some high-profile refugees out of Falkovnia and into Darkon.

The cleric is basically acting as a range-attack diversion. He's going to sneak with the refugees to the border, then cast Obscuring Mist and Shield of Ezra on himself, and hold a torch aloft. The Falkovnian soldiers will loose arrows at him, but the idea is that they won't hurt him because of the Shield of Ezra.

I have a few questions about this.

Shield of Ezra grants immunity to metal attacks for a LG caster, as I understand. But it's written with 3.0 in my Core Rulebook, and I'm playing 3.5. (DR 25! A little overpowered!) Has anybody updated or found an updated version of it for 3.5?

Secondly, from a pedantic viewpoint, would the cleric be immune to arrows? They're made of wood and metal tips. If the Shield creates a deflection effect, then it should turn aside the metal tips (and thus the wood as well). But if the Shield merely makes the metal not hurt the cleric, then presumably the wooden shaft could hurt him too.

What do you think?

(By the way, I'm thinking of using this little tactic to scare and unnerve the Falkovnians repeatedly. They will even start talking about the ghostly "Torch bearer of Liberty", which no weapon seems to harm, and who is seen escorting captives out of the country to safety. They might perhaps even attribute some sort of "Teeming masses yearning to breathe free" descriptor to it.)

A very good question. I'd knock the DR down to 10/non-metal which should still negate most arrows.

I'd say that it affects arrows. Since the name of the spell is "shield," I would suggest that it acts as one, that it physically turns aside the metal instead of just making it pass harmlessly through the body of the cleric. Once the arrowhead is turned aside, the shaft either goes with it, or the arrowhead snaps off and the shaft itself continues on with vastly reduced force and virtually no penetrating power.

(Whether it affects a specific arrow, of course, is a question of game mechanics, which is what Jester already has addressed and I'm sure others will as well...others that play 3.5.)
