Some times your own head can be the scariest of places.
This is a redo of a old idea I had.
Imagine the pcs come out of the mists to find a stunning and exotic land (think three kingdom china). They see rice farmers who are eager to talk, to eager, explaining the land of Jung was a empire it is much smaller now (it’s still huge). Suddenly a company of imperial soldiers come to take them to the emperor as guest. They don’t answer how they got thare so fast, or any other oddity’s. The pcs notice strange thangs as they travel: places from thare past, people that reminded them of loved ones, foe’s that are dead. When they get to emperor the pcs are suspicious, but the emperor is genuine in wanting thare company. He is charming and generous and seems willing to caterer to the pcs, almost as if he is afraid they will leave.
The land of Jung is a mirror of the mind. It can literally give personhood to your inner demons and suppressed feelings. In ravenloft everyone has inner demons. All are hiding something.
The dark lord the emperor, before coming to ravenloft was a ambitious member of imperial court, cleverly setup allies and enemy’s alike to fall and make him look uninvolved. He roses from nobody to right hand of the emperor, his mistake was using the political unrest to seize the throne. With him betraying everything, starting a civil war, he was taken by the mists. He is alone in Jung the only real livening person surrounded by mental facets of himself. He is a empire of one, he has more control then any ruler, but not complete control. His doubts form rebel cells, his guilt hide in shadows with assassins blades.

This reminds me of Scaena, to be honest, although the dread lord appears to be less secure in his position than Sediam.

I a way yes, but ultimately he is fighting himself, and he is vary good at quell his doubts.
I imagine he had a “oh god what have I done” moment as he watched the capital burn and realized thangs are out of control the mists came. Now emperor he ignored his moment of shelf reflection.

How does the land respond to differing images people might have of the same person, object, or location?
How much does the emperor know or suspect of his conditions?

Re: Jung: land of the inner voice(horror of the mind)
The emperor has the most control the “people” of the realm, he is aware of most thangs, but the “rebels” are personifications of thangs he refused to agnolige.
Re: Jung: land of the inner voice(horror of the mind)
On your first question, let me explain the mind effect change’s the land vary little, the “people” are vary reflective. Like you see a carpenter that reminds you of your father, but you are not sure why. Then you see a smiler mannerism to your dad, he dresses in smiler colors, you see him smile and you know “that is your father”. How?
