"Well we can go on down now, hopefully the rats have cleared out.”Alain says this after at least 5 more minutes or more have passed to let the rat swarms have gone wherever rat swarms go in the sewer.
After descending back down into the sewers Alain shows the others where the secret door he had seen the little devil like creatures escape into from the rat swarms and his effective magic. If needed he will search(1) for it with there help but he did see where they went so expects to find it rather easily. He will let them go first as per current SOP on this excursion to get his stuff back.
1. Search Check of 28. 32 if they both assist him in looking for the door.
Stoneguts asks-
‘’ Got any shrinking magic?’’
"No I'm afraid not. But if you crawl in there and open the door. And something decides to attack you while you do so I will blast it with a pinpoint spell that will not have any chance of hitting, but definitely will make the thing that tried to you attack back of so you can get into the room ." Alain says to Stoneguts.
Stoneguts looks at Otho.
''I'm shorter, but you are skinnier. You go.''
The rat-catcher looks a little nervous, but he gets flat on his belly and wriggles into the tunnel.....
With Stoneguts now holding the lantern, you are able to crouch behind Otho and peek over him down the passageway.
You see three or more of the little humanoids appear further down the tunnel, rushing Otho with saps!
The ratter cries out in alarm and tries to crawl backwards.
Alain on seeing the little bastards coming out of their hole blasts them with a spell(MM) he had readied for just such a situation .
Two of the little bastards won't be ambushing anybody ever again - their heads pop like grapes when struck by bolts of magic force! Another one crumples in front of Otho.
Otho cries out '' Got 'em!''
The ratter wiggles out backwards. He's dragging something with him....one of the small humanoids, which he's pulling out by the ankle.
The ugly little creature is only about the size of a raccoon. He's alive but unconscious.
"Well what do we have here ." With those words Alain pulls out some rope from his bag . Then he proceeds to tie the little bastard up . After doing so he wakes the little guy gently by shaking him .
Eeeek! Eeeebajeeebaeeek-akkk!
The little humanoid jabbers in a most incomprehensible manner. It's hard to see whether this is some kind of speech, or just noise-making.
Stoneguts takes a look and comments-
''It isn't a goblin.''
"Speak in a language I can understand- now- or suffer the more of what I have already inflicted on you !!"Alain says in all the languages he knows . With that Alain cocks his finger in the gesture of shooting a bolt of magical force from it .
The creature gibbers and squeaks- but it makes no sense. There's no pattern to the noises.
Otho asks-
''It's smart, right? How come it sounds like that?"
"I guess it is not that smart then . So we will have to put it down for good measure ."Alain says in hopefully scaring the creature into saying something intelligent that will make it talk to them .
The creature just squeals and squeaks more, but still doesn't speak.
It waggles its ugly head from side to side. Its eyes get REALLY BIG. It shivers and squirms, straining against its bonds.
Hmmm Alain thinks to himself that maybe it understands but can't communicate in a language we understand or perhaps it has no real language at all and still understands us to some degree . With these thoughts Alain squats down to next to the thing and says to the little fellow: "I was just kidding . So stop shivering . If you understand me just nod you head up and down like this ." Alain then shows by doing so himself .
It nods up and down, and then emits a little chirping sound.
"So how many of you guys are in there ? Just nod your head at the right amount . "Pointing with his hand to where it came from . With these questions Alain proceeds to hold up different amounts of fingers to signify 1 to 10 or more by flashing his hand more than once to indicate more than 10 .
The creature nods each time you move your hands.
"Is there 10 or more of you guys in there and don't you dare lie to me if you know what’s good for you . "Alain says to him .
The creature nods his head up and down, several times.
Eeeep-eep!
With that information Alain proceeds to ask several questions to narrow down exactly how many there are .
Young gather the impression that there must be between ten and twenty of the things- if you are correctly interpreting this thing's gestures.
"It looks like that from what I can tell that there are some where between 10 and 20 in there ." Alain points back to where the little guy came from . Saying to his companions .
Otho asks-
''So, euh...not rats. What should we do?''
Stoneguts adds-
''We should keep an eye out for traps- if these critters are smart enough to make secret doors...''
"All good points we should take into consideration . I think I will take a chance and send this little fellow back in . I will have him tell the rest of his fellow's that if they don't give my stuff back . That I will come in and get my stuff back and kill any of them that get in my way . And they better stop taking stuff from underneath or I will come back with more big people that will finish them off for good . " Alain's then proceeds to do what he said he would do . He also describes the coffer that they stole and that they need to return it . Releasing him after talking to him .
The newly freed captive takes off down the hole.
Ten minutes pass.
Nothing happens,
Otho puts an ear to the wall.
''Hrmmmmm...I hear noises.''
Stoneguts, crouching by the hole, calls out softly-
''Something's coming.''
Three of the little creatures emerge from the hole , pushing your coffer ahead of them.
The coffer is closed, but the lock looks as if it's been jimmied.
The three critters dodge back inside their hole.
Alain will check his coffer for traps(1) and if there are none he will open it and check to be make sure all his stuff is there .
1.Search 27 check result .
No traps. You catch an unpleasant whiff of ...something when you open the coffer. You stuff is all or at least mostly there, in disarray and mixed in with trash. A dead rat lies stiff in the bottom of the coffer, pierced by needles.
Alain take's out his stuff and cleans it with a torch to get rid of whatever that smell is. Then he puts his stuff back in and says to his hirelings "Well thanks for your help . So let's get out of here and get cleaned up too ." With that he lead's them back to the surface and bath that he will treat them also too if they want one too . After that he will go home to a good nights sleep .

Delight is to him- a far, far upward, and inward delight- who against the proud gods and commodores of this earth, ever stands forth his own inexorable self.

Re: Alain's miniadventure, PMs- a 'rough draft' but a record
As noted, this is pretty rough. PMs tend to have a choppier flow than IC posts. I am missing a few 'sent' PMs, but nothing that affects the outline of action in a meaningful way.
I'm just posting this for those curious about what Alain was doing about the critters that stole his coffer.
