Re: The Walking Dead: Psychologies

I love that idea of the coins pouring out and the creature re-consuming them. super-duper creepy. very nice! Thanks. I give half the credit to the guy who brought up the "coin cannibal" thread, as that is what got me thinking in that direction. What about the rest of you, though, I imagin...

Re: The Walking Dead: Psychologies

Oh, I've read all the Guides and most of the Ravenloft splat books, it has simple been a long time since I did so - so I'm brushing back up on the material. The only problem I recall having with Toben the Many was the "Hannibal Lecter" vibe they seemed to be shooting for ... that personali...

The Walking Dead: Psychologies

Further into the same chapter of the "VanRichten's Guide to the Walking Dead" there is some discussion about psychology and obsession of the walking dead and I thought it might be fun to come up with some interesting and hopefully creepy ideas for different walking dead behaviors. I'm not ...

The Walking Dead: The Craving

After a years long hiatus I am returning to my Ravenloft game in the near future and as such was reading through my VanRichten's Guides again. In the intro to "The Walking Dead" the book discusses "The Craving" which drives the undead and states that the most basic craving - that...

Re: Fynny cursed item "coin-cannibal"

The concept of the Coin eater also got me thinking about a curse one might find a hermit laboring under ... once a wealthy man, he was since cursed so that he can only eat money - the higher the denomination, the better it tastes and the longer it will keep him nourished. Either that or a wretched, ...

Re: Burning of haunted house

Also, remember that just because the house is burnt down doesn't mean the ghost is gone. Some enterprising schmucks may always want to build anew on top of the property later on (giving you sequel hooks later on down the line). "If you build it, they will come." I got this great image of ...

Re: native outsiders and reality wrinkles

by the 3e rules, they would not, since they don't have the "Good" or "Evil" descriptors. I haven't used either IMC, but if I did, I'd go by that rule. Their outsider blood is too thin to have any effect on the fabric of the demiplane. If you're native, you're not really an outsi...

Re: Borders and Mistways

To put it plainly: A party of adventurers crossing Barovia riding to Hazlan and ending up riding into Dementlieu would be surprised, would be unable to explain it but they would propably accept it far, far easier than a man in middle ages would. I.e. if it fits the story, nobody is going to complai...

Re: Witches!

I tend to portray Hags as embodiments of Envy and Gluttony. The Hag is a horribly disfigured thing, living for centuries but never youthful - it resents youth, beauty, purity and love. Hags near villages will often - in a role as hedge witch - try and destroy any of those things when she sees it. Sh...

Re: Powers Check-Assisted Suicide

Remember that this is a setting where horrible conditions such as lycanthropy or undeath can very literally make suicide or a mercy kill the lesser of two evils. ... it's probably appropriate to rule that the Dark Powers turn a blind eye to that specific type of killing ... at least, so long as it ...

Re: Fynny cursed item "coin-cannibal"

The question is, how intelligent is it? Does it have the sense not to eat every other coin in its container, leaving only itself left? Because the players might make the mistake of tossing that coin into their pouch again, but when the same thing happened they'd quickly figure it out and toss it int...

Re: Bards

Eh, it is all in how you play any class. The NPC I mentioned tried to be up beat, but he was a melancholy soul with a dark past, forbidden love, blood pact, horrible secrets, and hatred for soul draining undead. (he could never make a save against level drain - not once in his entire career) In fact...

Re: What (other) class is Strahd?

Considering he was a Lord in "I, Strahd", that would make him a 9th level fighter in 2E. While I agree one needn't be strictly bound by the rules in those regards, he was put off as a powerful warrior-general and - game wise - 9th level would make him a significant force on the battlefield...

Re: Making Ravenloft more self-contained

Bluetspur is the Moon. I wish I knew who first suggested this, because it is a stroke of genius. Myself and another poster on the old (now very old) Ravenloft mailing list hammered this out years back. We had a lot of very talented people on that list; these days I only recognize a handful of faces...

Re: Bards

I don't have a problem with Bards in Ravenloft personally. Indeed, I ran a three year campaign in which the major npc companion was a Bard undead hunter and he was a very interesting character - adding both drama and the occasional bit of levity to the game. (he was a unapologetic womanizer and that...
