Re: Ravenloft Horror Within - source book set for June 2026

So... it is a completely "fight zombies in the apocalypse" type and civilization would end within a few months as the siege is persistent and relentless, with mounting casualties from a small population. Not just unsustainable and hopeless, but the end is within sight. Which makes the tyranny ...

Re: Ravenloft Horror Within - source book set for June 2026

My opinion of 5e Valachan is that it's a domain that becomes weaker the more one probes its inspirations, and would be better served as a new domain rather than trying to be an update of an existing domain. One of its weaknesses comes from the difference between a story and an RPG setting. While ...

Re: Ravenloft Horror Within - source book set for June 2026

There's also Arak, Blutspur, and the Nightmare Lands, which the Black Box didn't provide a dark lord for.

Forlorn also had no known lord at the time.

There were also a bunch mentioned in the descriptions of their domains but not given full(ish) write-ups in the Black Box, namely Ivana ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

How about the ghost of an anarchist, similar to an odem or animator, which possesses people and objects (in particular, guillotines)?

This could work. I already have an idea for a headless ghost kicking around. Why not both? A guillotine possessed by the ghost of one of its victims, that can ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

DEMISE – Move Althea over to Vechor, where she fits better thematically. You can either demote her from darklordship or keep her maze a pocket domain.

DOMINIA – I would split this domain down the middle, moving the good Dr. Heinforth and his asylum somewhere on the mainland (perhaps the island ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

DEMENTLIEU

Simple Substitutions – The usual suspects here are the Brain (of Rudolf Aubrecker, detailed in RMCII) or Celeste D'Honaire-Loverde (detailed in LoTB). Both of these candidates would essentially use the same gimmick as Dominic but with subtle differences. Then there's some people that ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

Well let Drakov take it over, only to discover that Darkon is too big to be governed with his iron hand approach and without magic and undead enforcer.

I'm trying to avoid swapping one darklord out for another. I want to advance the campaign setting, not just rearrange it.

Plus... Spoiler ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

DARKON

This is a tough one because we already have several different canon iterations of this domain. There's the OG domain with Azalin in control. Then, the Necropolis phase with multiple demilords ruling over various regions, and finally we have the 5E version where the land is literally ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

DAGLAN (THE DUSKREACH CLUSTER, ETC.)

Oh yes, this is happening! You can accuse me of being overly nostalgic, I don't care. This is the centerpiece for my post-TOUD Ravenloft that I call the Return of the Lost (at least, that's the working title). Basically, it's just an excuse to bring back some ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

WDYT about a new sea?
Maybe one where more darklords are inside the sea rather than on a spooky ship or island, for once?
An aboleth in a rivalry with the God Brain?
A siren of some sort?
A new take on Atlantis, if you gotta have humans around?
An Ursula expy?

Even though I plan on demoting a ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

Didn't Vecna, like, already canonically escape?

Yes, in Die Vecna Die! , which should probably be placed in late 751 or some time in 752 to put it between the last of the other 2e modules and the start of the 3e timeline. That depends on Ravenloft Wobbly Time, since Vecna Lives! is in 581 CY ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

THE BURNING PEAKS CLUSTER (CAVITUS / TOVAG)

In keeping with the uh... house cleaning mandate of the ToUD event, it's time to say goodbye to this duo of domains and let them dissolve away into the mists.

My reasons are three...

1) We already have a vampire and lich conflict between Strahd and ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

My own inclination would be to have Ivana delve further into some alchemical studies, perhaps importing instructors from Paridon to better learn the craft. She eventually becomes adept enough to create an Alchemical Child (see Van Richten's Arsenal for details) but she is unhappy with the ...

Re: Year 780 is close!

BORCA

The main question here seems to be whether to keep Ivana and Ivan as co-darklords or ditch one or the other. I think it was a stroke of genius to combine the domains and pitting these two against each other. I would hate to lose that dynamic but if a gun were put to my head I would have ...

Re: A Ducklord?

Then there's this guy. Not technically a duck, but he definitely could earned himself a domain with such destructive behavior! (I'm picturing a pocket domain within a small, out the way village in Mordent.)
