Actually thinking about, emptied barrels are likely to be a chief source of burnable wood on the island. So perhaps screech would work. One burns old barrels to steam the rum out of new barrels, then one lets the latter dry, before setting them alight.

Howe was, if I recall correctly, the captain engaged in the previous gazetteer on the Nocturnal Sea. I trust this displacement from one sea to the other is accounted for. Alternatively, a new and different captain would add to the stock of readily available NPCs.
