Re: The Machine

It has an American Gods vibe to it. That is, Internet, Technology, etc — after years of 'worship' by modern peoples — becoming gods in their own right. I think one thing that would help the Machine would be a defined goal. A reason to manifest and steer the events of the world. Similar to how the Am...

Re: Gothic Horror vs Dark Fantasy

I missed the memo on the Cartulary of Nartok.

Just spent a few moments skimming it. Wow. Looks to be a great resource. Thanks for contributing/sharing it.

Definitely going to give it a read later when I have the time.

Gothic Horror vs Dark Fantasy

I was reading this thread about the soon-to-be released Ravenloft novel ... and it got me thinking. I remember the 2E days where the setting was incredibly human-centric and players needed to be advised/warned that the demi-human character that they had proposed would meet a certain level of rolepla...

Re: Rule question for Dungeons and Dragons!

With regard to surviving the injury, I would apply the rules regarding massive injury. In 2nd, 3rd and 5th edition, variant/optional rules were introduced for what happens after a character injures/loses a limb. (Re 4th; I do not own any material from that edition so I cannot say for sure if they ex...

Re: Movies that have that Ravenloft feel

Just watched Bag of Lies.

Some good material in the film that could transplant rather easily into a RL campaign.

Re: Doppelganger vs. Lycanthropy

I like the psychological affliction angle. Taking it a step further ... what becomes an afflicted doppelganger when the change is upon him? Do they ... change into a blood-crazed animal? A blood-crazed hybrid animal? Yawn. That's what happens when humanoids are afflicted with lycanthropy. If everyth...

Re: Ravenloft - Strahd's Possession

I fully admit to not being a tech guy ...

But after some google-fu, I managed to find a thread on another site that seemed helpful.

The very first post mentioned a few settings to tweak with regard to the video & audio output of the game.

Hope that helps.

There's quite a few decisions in that film that would have led to Powers checks.

Re: Cursebreakers [Campaign Design]

Thank you very much for the suggestions, gang. The game, however, fizzled and died before it got too far underway. It's been my experience that PbP games (whether I am helming them or acting solely as player) tend to wither on the vine more often than they don't. Eventually, I'd like to be in someth...

Re: Anyone ever heard of an undead fiend?

It might be a neat angle to explore if you ruled that a fiend who found their way to undeath sort of 'removed' themselves from a more normal fiendish ecology. So like, normally, a fiend not-on-its-home-plane dies ... and it gets to reform (and, most likely, seek sweet sweet revenge). But maybe, upon...

Cursebreakers [Campaign Design]

Hey gang, I am starting a new D&D 5E campaign on another play-by-post site. The setting will not be Ravenloft per se, as it will be set in the Forgotten Realms, but it will definitely be have some Ravenloft-y vibes and lean heavily into some dark fantasy tropes. I was hoping to use this thread t...

Re: Playing Ravenloft with Complete Newbies

Calls to mind a saying from my youth.

There are old pilots adventurers, and there are bold pilots adventurers. But there are no old, bold pilots adventurers.

A healthy dose of 'be careful out there' is always a good thing.
