Law enforcement is the upholding of the law, which is to say, the imposition of the will of state upon its citizenry. Law enforcement includes investigation of crimes by the police, arrestation by the police of suspects, judgement by trial of the accused, and punishment by state agents such as jailors or executioners of the condemned. The degree to which law enforcement in a given state tends to yield justice or, alternatively, is given over to corruption, varies wildly.
