Appearing in the Ravenloft product line novel Tower of Doom, the Bell of Doom was a dread artifact of darkness left over from earlier times in Darkon's false history. It was discovered by Wort and later destroyed by Mika.

History

In the ancient false history of Darkon, there were three unnamed children of a long-forgotten king whom ordered a smith to forge a great bell of bronze and silver, two metals unable to bind. The smith sacrificed the three children and used their blood to make the two metals bind together. Yet the malevolent act warped their spirits, binding them to the now Bell of Doom[1] and cursed it, such that every time the bell was rung.[2]

The Bell sat in an abandoned cathedral east of Nartok for many years, until Wort heard from Brinn that his means of revenge against the Nartok people would be there. Wort discovered the Bell of Doom and took it back to his old bell tower and rang it. The Spirits told Wort of their true nature- that they kill every time the bell is rang, and that they must kill the bellringer unless the ringer has a personal possession- a token for them to focus their wrath upon. Wort gave them the bloody glove of Castellan Domeck, and he became their first victim.[3] Many more would follow to fulfill Wort's vengeance, though the ghosts themselves seemed very bloodthirsty themselves, for they called Mort back to ringing the bell even when he left them to spend time with Mika. After Wort saw Mika with the hated Baron Caidin, he turned back to his murder spree with wanton abandon[4], using the spirits to exact his revenge upon the sinners of Nartok while at the same time implicating Baron Caidin for the developments. In so doing, Wort fomented the seeds of rebellions against the peasants of Nartok.[5]

Things changed when Baron Caidin stole the Bell and accidentally unleashed it upon Mika. Her innocent nature repelled the ghosts, lifted their curse, and destroyed them. As they vanished in a crimson vortex, they called to their father they were coming to him. The Bell and Baron Caidin were destroyed in the backlash, and the dead killed by the bell rose from the grave enmasse to wreak their revenge upon Wort.[6]
